Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S Embassy London
Lew Lukens is the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in London; in that role he serves as Chief Operating Officer of the U.S. Mission to the United Kingdom. From 2014-2016 Lew was the Department of State’s Diplomat in Residence for the Northwest; based at UC Berkeley, he was responsible for recruitment and outreach for the Department of State in Montana, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and northern California. Lew was Ambassador to Senegal and Guinea-Bissau from 2011-2014, running one of the U.S.’s largest embassies in Africa. As Executive Director of the Department of State’s Executive Secretariat from 2008-2011, he directed all management support for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, including her overseas travel. From 2005-2008 he was Consul General in Vancouver, BC, managing U.S. relations with Western Canada. From 2001 to 2005 he served as Senior Director for Administration at the National Security Council, as Management Counselor in Dublin, and as Executive Secretary in Baghdad. Earlier assignments included Australia, Cote d’Ivoire, and China, as well as several postings in the Department of State’s Executive Secretariat.
Lew has an AB in History from Princeton University, and a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
